What You Missed At Bumbershoot 2018 – Photo Recap

For those in the Seattle area, Bumbershoot festival is one of the most accessible large-scale events there is. I made the trip in under 30-minutes and found free parking both days. Uber, Lyft, and other forms of public transportation clear up the roads for drivers and severely cuts down on festival traffic. Inside the festival hordes of humans are soaking up the smoke-free sunshine. The city is active as summer transitions to fall, and Bumbershoot takes advantage of everyone’s three-day Labor Day weekend. Here’s what you missed at Bumbershoot 2018.

The Stars Were Out

Bumbershoot put together one of its best lineups to date. It featured legends from our youths,  up and coming superstars, and everything in between. Highlights of the festival included T-Pain, who played the soundtrack of my high school years. Marian Hill and Chromeo scorching the Fisher Green stage. Black Pistol Fire electrifying the Mural Amiptheatre, Cold War Kids rocking their hits, and Travis Thompson proving why he’s one of Seattle’s brightest young spitters. Also at the festival was J. Cole, Sza, and Portugal the Man. These larger acts threw down in Memorial Stadium. This was my first time in a stadium that I’ve referenced in several Seattle hip-hop songs. It’s still difficult to get inside when there is a line, which takes away from the festival feel a bit. However, once inside it’s a major upgrade from the confinements of Key Arena. You can move between the stadium seating and the floor without hesitation.

Food & Vibes

Supplementing the huge musical performances were great weather, food, and vibes. In between sets people were grabbing food from the B-Eats food court, featuring some of the cities top eateries like Bok a Bok, Radiator Whiskey, Southpaw Pizza and Little Fish. The best deal on the menu was Bok’s 10 piece wing for $11. Each order came with three different sauces. This was the go-to meal for day two and three. Bai was gracious enough to supply the entire festival with sugar-free energy drinks for the entire weekend. Bai makes delicious beverages and sipping on these saved me a bunch of money I normally would have spent.

Listen To All Star Opera’s & KnowMads New Track “No Days Off”

This is the KnowMads first major collaboration in recent memory and it was mostly written during the Couch Surfin’ Tour last year, in which All Star Opera opened for them. This track comes hot off the heels of All Star Opera’s debut album while laying the anticipation for a new KnowMads album expected by the end of the year.

“No Days Off” explores themes like exploring the world on a tour bus, sacrificing days off, grinding with your family and manifesting your dreams.

This song blends together the best elements from All Star Opera and the Knowmads. There’s a lot going on through this track, but all of the elements flow effortlessly. After a quick intro/skit about flirting with sandwich artists and touring banter with some shit-talking sprinkled in,  Flow Carter and Tom Pepe start the track off with back-to-back verses. Then, Tom Wilson and All Star lead Pepe into the hook. Pepe rocks a catchy-feel-good hip-hop hook as good as anyone.

Wilson and Oz have smooth and pronounced flows that play off each other nicely in the next portion of the song. This record does a great job of blending Pepe and Wilson’s Knowmadic lyrical prowess with All Star’s signature funk-laden hip-hop sound. This isn’t a party or club anthem for the Summer. This record is an anthem for the drifters, hustlers, and everyone who actually works their ass off to live their dreams while other people happily choose the path of least resistance.

Listen To New Seattle Hip-Hop With Pineapple Dream From GreenRush

Pineapple Dream is a sweeter indica leaning version of Blue Dream. It’s Blue Dream crossed with Pineapple OG. It has a notable sweet taste. After each hit of the joint, I could taste pineapple remnants on my lips. Treat your pallet with this sweet tasting flower and treat your ears with some new music from Nick Weaver and the KnowMads.

Weaver released a new track while he’s waiting to go back on tour in Europe. An experimental instrumental production that focuses on sound over lyrics.

The KnowMads followed up their Harry Fraud collaboration (featured on RespectMyRegion.com) with another single. Cold Brew is over three minutes of bars. This one is for the hardcore fans. Tom Pepe puts his skill on display, spitting bars reminiscent of his younger and darker years, but without the darkness. Switching from drug to coffee has uplifted his spirits and the lyrics have followed.
